Per certi versi, la situazione è peggiore di quanto Appelbaum non ammetta, perché molti economisti mainstream della seconda metà del XX secolo hanno lavorato non solo partendo dal presupposto di mercati efficienti, ma anche da quello di mercati perfettamente funzionanti. Come ha detto Tony Atkinson a proposito del libro che lui e Stiglitz avevano pubblicato nel 1980, “esso cristallizzava molte ipotesi sui mercati perfettamente funzionanti che avrebbero dovuto essere alla base di molte discussioni sulla politica stessa”. Se avessero dovuto riscrivere il libro, lui e Stiglitz sarebbero invece partiti “da un mondo in cui ci sono concorrenza monopolistica, informazioni imperfette [...] e ogni sorta di cose”.
